One of a number of prestigious federal initiatives for building research capability is the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program. The suite of programs starts with early support for graduate students through the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships program, moves on to postdoctoral training through the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program, and then continues through the academic career progression (Tier 1 and 2 Canada Research Chairs) to a career pinnacle with the Canada Excellence Research Chairs, as well as the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, which was announced in 2014.

Collectively, these initiatives aim to improve Canada’s pool of highly skilled researchers and promote the country abroad as one that does high-caliber research and offers research training. In addition to this, the three federal awarding organizations’ postdoctoral fellowship programs (Canadian Institutes of Health Research, or CIHR) are also useful training tools, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada – NSERC, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada – SSHRC).

Highly competitive and ambitious scholars can fulfill their full potential and advance their careers through the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program. After completing their fellowships, Banting fellows will be in a good position to support the development of Canada’s research capability as well as the economic and social success of the nation.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program offers support to the top postdoctoral candidates from throughout the world who will significantly advance the nation’s social, economic, and scientific advancement.

The objective of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is to:

  • To attract postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally
