Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship

There are six types of Japanese government-sponsored scholarships available under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship program: those for research students, teacher training students, undergraduate students, Japanese studies students, college of technology students, specialized training college students.

Those wishing to apply for a scholarship should meet one of the criteria listed below:

  1. Recommended by a Japanese embassy or consulate-general (Embassy Recommendation).
  2. Recommended by the Japanese university which will accept you (University Recommendation).

Eligibility 

1. Applicants: Applicants must be international students of graduate school level with excellent academic achievement.
2. Nationality: Applicants must have the nationality of a country designated by MEXT.
3. Age: Applicants, in principle, must have been born on or after April 2, 1986.
4. Academic Background: Applicants must satisfy one of the qualification requirements to enter a master’s degree program or a doctoral degree program at a Japanese graduate school.
5. Fields of Study: Applicants should apply for the field of study they majored in at university or a related field.
6. Language Ability: Applicants must be proficient in Japanese or English language.
7. Health: applicants must be free from any physical or mental conditions that would impede their studies in Japan.


SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS

(1) Allowance: The amounts listed below shall be paid depending on the course enrolled in. (It includes a supplemental regional allowance of 3,000 JPY per month.) Due to the situation of the Japanese Government’s budget, the amount of payment is subject to change each fiscal year. The scholarship shall be canceled if a grantee is absent from the university for an extended
period.
1. Non-degree-seeking students: 146,000 JPY per month.
2. Regular students enrolled in master’s course: 147,000 JPY  per month.
3. Regular students enrolled in doctoral courses: 148,000 JPY per month

(2) Transportation to and from Japan: In principle, MEXT stipulates the travel schedule and route, and provides an economy-class airline ticket

(3) Education fees: Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition will be covered by MEXT.
